Demystifying Detox: The Truth Behind January's Buzzword

January is often synonymous with new beginnings, resolutions, and a renewed focus on health and one term that consistently dominates conversations during this time is "detox”.

Detox Gut Health

As a seasoned 53-year-old Osteopath who's been on the detox train for years, I think it is important to shed light on what detoxing truly means and dispel some common myths.

What is Detoxification?

Detox is  the body's own superhero squad (liver, kidneys, lungs, skin, and digestive system) working 24/7 to eliminate toxins and waste products. But guess what? In our modern world filled with medications ,pollutants and stressors, these organs are stretched and we need to give our bodies a helping hand to ensure they function optimally.

Common Myth: The Body Detoxes on its Own

Yes, our bodies are pretty amazing, but with the onslaught of pollutants from processed foods, medications, household and personal care products , and additional environmental nasties, sometimes they need a little nudge. Let's be honest, who hasn't overindulged during the holidays?

Supporting your body's detox process is like unblocking a drain and restarting the fire of your metabolism ! While it's true that our body has the ability to detoxify itself, the modern world bombards us with so many  pollutants and stressors, all of this overwhelms the natural detox process. It is crucial therefore, to keep all those organ systems moving and working well if we want to avoid illness and feeling yuk!

Common Myth 2:  Food Can’t Influence Detoxing

Oh, contraire! Food is like the sidekick in this detox adventure. To prove that , I’ll give you  an example. Let's consider the enigma of grapefruit and its interaction with detox pathways and blood pressure medication.

All experts/medics know foods like Grapefruit speed up Phase 1 detox pathways and know they don't help phase 2 detox pathways. We are able to absorb more toxins, but can’t detoxify them as quickly. That’s why people with hypertension are often advised against consuming grapefruit due to its potential to re tox the body and the potential to influence the effectiveness of medications. Food is highly influential. While the body has detox superpowers, our chaotic modern lives scream for intentional and mindful support.

If you want to say bye bye to that belly bloat, aid your digestion, increase metabolism, improve sleep and energy yield, even reduce Menopausal symptoms, and bonus - lose a few pounds.

Here are 2 ways to Support Your Body's Detoxification:
